Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two years earlier, it wasn’t until this moment that the news reached enslaved African Americans in Texas, making Juneteenth a symbol of freedom and the end of chattel slavery in the United States.

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declared that all enslaved individuals in Confederate territory were to be set free.
